I have been trying to find a supplier of Russian honey bees that will send me a package of bees for this spring. So far none of the suppliers that I found will ship to Washington state.
I decided to check on the bees yesterday and found some disturbing things. There were lots of dead bees on the ground and front porch of the hive. I found dead bees in the snow up to 4 feet away. It looked like they had been flying and just dropped.
The tar paper I put on the hive in November was warping and had small bugs living behind the paper. These bugs looked like small thin silver fish. There were also bees behind the tar paper that were dead.
I removed the tar paper from the hive and cleaned the outside as best I could in the snow. Replacing the tar paper that wrapped the hive with just one panel of pick foam insulation on the front of the hive. This was done to just protect the hive from cold winds that only hit the front of the hive.
